At least 10 people have been killed and over 70 injured in a powerful car bomb blast that targeted a cinema hall in a busy commercial area in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar on Friday.
The blast destroyed the front of the Tasveer Mahal movie hall located in Kabuli Market in the heart of Peshawar. The explosion, which was heard across the city, damaged some adjoining buildings and destroyed several vehicles.
Ten people were killed and 75 others were injured in the blast, Geo TV reported quoting officials.
The cinema hall, one of the oldest in the provincial capital, collapsed due to the impact of the blast in the area where some other movie theatres as well as a number of music centers, video shops and hotels were situated.
About 40 to 50 kilogram explosive material was used in the blast, Capital City Police Officer Safwat Ghauor said.
The injured were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital, where condition of some was described by doctors as serious.
No group claimed responsibility for the blast, though officials said it could have been the handiwork of local Taliban who had warned owners of movie theatres to shut their establishments.
