Twelve stranded foreigners, comprising eight Belgian and four Swedish tourists, were rescued Thursday by the armed forces from a tribal district in Himachal Pradesh, an official said.
In other areas of Lahaul and Spiti district, however, over 100 people have been stranded since Sep 19 due to heavy snowfall.
“Twelve foreigners were airlifted in the (Thursday) morning from Kaza and taken to Bhuntar near Kullu town,” Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner C. Paul Rasu told IANS.
He said Wednesday four Belgian tourists were airlifted from Kaza and taken to Bhuntar.
Rasu said most of the stranded people were taken to safer places and provided essential items by rescue teams.
“As the sky is clear this morning, air and ground rescue operations are in full swing. We hope that maximum number of people would be rescued and provided help before dusk,” he said.
Seven scientists of the Geological Survey of India, who have been marooned near the Chandertal Lake, were safely brought to Keylong town Wednesday, Rasu added.
