Jammu and Kashmir’s newly elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has broken the convention set by his father Farooq Abdullah of having the principal secretary attend all cabinet meetings.
While Chief Secretary S.S. Kapur, who is also the cabinet secretary, took his place at the first cabinet meeting of the new administration Wednesday evening, Principal Secretary K.A. Ganai was not invited to join in.
After being elected chief minister in 1996, Farooq Abdullah invited his principal secretary B.R. Singh to all cabinet meetings.
Even Farooq Abdullah’s successors Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad used to invite their principal secretaries to the cabinet meetings.
However, officials have welcomed Omar Abdullah’s move as a “healthy practice”.
“The sanctity of the office of the chief secretary has been restored,” said a senior officer.
The cabinet, in its first meeting, appointed P.S Gill as the new vigilance commissioner and Samuel Verghese as the new commissioner (home).
