New Delhi: The Unique Identification Number Authority of India project, which is meant for identifying the person,it is not enough to prove a person’s citizenship.

In this project every person will be provided with a unique ID number. It would also include name, birth date, address, family details and finger prints of the person.

Nandan Nilekani, the project head, said in this regard, “The unique ID number is optional and will not be proof of the person’s citizenship.”

Maharashtra being a major state in IT industry, would lead in implementing the project, Nilekani expressed confidently, which will cover at least 60 crore Indians within 12 to 18 months.

An Authority for the project was set up in February and would take helps from banks, Election Commission, state governments and other organisations to collect data of people.

A high level committee would be appointed to monitor the work, headed by state
Chief Secretary.
